Every family has one.

The unpredictable cousin. Not the screwup, that’s different. This one is impeccably put together. He simply arrives wearing something nobody else would have had the nerve to choose, and by the end of the evening everyone else looks a little dull.

In 1972, that was VANAC.

For a decade, King Seiko had built its reputation on restraint: sharp cases, precise movements, disciplined dials. Serious Japanese watches for serious people.

Then Seiko put a green dial behind a beveled, multifaceted crystal, surrounded it with a gold bezel ring, attached the whole thing to an integrated steel bracelet and printed SPECIAL on the dial.

The timing matters.

Seiko had introduced the Astron three years earlier. Quartz wasn’t some threat arriving from somewhere else. Seiko itself had helped invent the future. The company knew better than almost anyone what was coming for the mechanical wristwatch.

And in 1972, somebody dressed for the party anyway.

The VANAC wasn’t King Seiko losing its mind. It was King Seiko discovering that technical seriousness and good behavior weren’t the same thing.

Look closely and the bravado is remarkably disciplined. The green dial is rich without becoming gaudy, set against the warmth of that gold bezel ring. The faceted crystal doesn’t merely protect the dial; it participates in it, bending the light and changing the watch as the wrist moves. The angular case flows directly into its integrated bracelet. Fifty-four years later, the whole thing still feels deliberate.

Nothing about it seems accidental and then there’s that word on the dial:

SPECIAL.

Underneath is Daini Seikosha’s caliber 5246, a 25-jewel high-beat automatic running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with manual winding, hacking seconds and bilingual day/date. This wasn’t fashion disguising an ordinary watch. VANAC had the mechanical substance to support the swagger.
