Grand Seiko GMT SBGM003

There was a time when Grand Seiko was still mostly a secret outside Japan. The SBGM003 comes from that era.

Introduced years before Grand Seiko's worldwide launch in 2010, the SBGM003 represents a very different period for the company—when some of its finest mechanical watches were being made primarily for a domestic audience and international collectors had to go looking for them.

And this one rewards the effort.

The dial is a warm ivory rather than stark white, interrupted by a tempered blue GMT hand that changes character as it catches the light. The applied markers and razor-edged hands provide the precision Grand Seiko became famous for, while the Zaratsu-polished stainless-steel case gives the watch a presence that photographs never quite capture.

Inside is Grand Seiko's caliber 9S56, an automatic mechanical GMT with an independently adjustable local-hour hand—a proper traveler's GMT. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 50 hours of power reserve.

But the proportions may be the best part.

At 39.5mm, the SBGM003 comes from before luxury watches began competing for wrist presence through sheer size. It is substantial enough to feel modern but restrained enough to disappear under a cuff.

Grand Seiko would eventually step onto the international stage and become one of the world's recognized manufacturers. The SBGM003 comes from just before that happened.

It is Grand Seiko before the rest of the world caught on.
