Grand Seiko SBGR325 "Mid-Heaven" 25th Anniversary Limited Edition

A great watch ought to interrupt you occasionally.

You’re at your laptop, pounding out emails, trying to finish something. Sunlight comes through the window, catches the dial, and you stop typing. You turn your wrist for another look.

The SBGR325 is that kind of watch.

Released in 2023 to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Grand Seiko’s 9S mechanical movement family, it was limited to 1,200 pieces worldwide. Its blue sunray dial takes its inspiration from the clear sky seen from the summit of Mount Iwate, near the home of Grand Seiko’s mechanical watchmaking in Shizukuishi.

Another Grand Seiko, another landscape. We know the joke. But the natural world runs through Japanese art and design, and we’re inclined to give that influence room to express itself here. Especially when the result looks like this.

Light travels across the blue, meeting the sharply cut hands and hour markers. The gold Grand Seiko logo brings a little warmth. A heat-blued seconds hand adds a darker blue to the composition. There’s enough happening to keep your attention, without anything feeling crowded.

Turn it over and there’s another pleasure: the commemorative titanium winding rotor, colored Grand Seiko blue through anodic oxidation.

When this watch arrived at Vaulted, I showed my wife. “Ooh, pretty dial,” she said. I immediately told her to flip it over.
